In May 2008 I packed up my family and made the move to Calgary to join our local office. Before I left I started exploring what local UX community there was in Calgary. What I did find was a Calgary UX Google Group started a few years ago by Scott Weisbrod at Critical Mass. I went out to a couple get-togethers the group had and got a chance to meet some of the local people working in UX.

One thing I noticed was that the group was having a hard time generating any momentum – things that will help you build a community. So, in Oct 2008 a few of us locally decided to take a stab at moving the group forward and getting some regular momentum behind UX in Calgary and began planning four 2009 events. Much like Vancouver’s VanUE, we want Calgary UX to be a home for our community of user experience professionals.

We just had our first event January 27 and had a great turnout (~35 people on word-of-mouth alone). Presentations included:

Axure Prototyping – Scott Anderson (UX Guys)

Rapid Design Labs – Dave Robertson (ThoughtWorks)

Creating a User Experience Culture – Gene Smith (nForm)

Sketching User Experience with Clients – me (Habañero). You can see my presentation here.

If you are in Calgary or interested in finding out more about Calgary UX you can:

Ben and I are going on the road to teach about our user experience process at Habañero. We will be visiting Calgary on December 3 & 4, and Regina on January 26 & 27. Brrrrr!

Course Synopsis

In this course you will explore a number of tools and techniques that you can integrate into any website, intranet, or software development process to create a first-class user experience. You will be able to try many of the approaches illustrated in the seminar through a number of hands-on activities and exercises.

Every participant will leave the course with a wide array of user experience tools and techniques. In addition, we will provide a comprehensive set of course materials and templates — a valuable resource when using the described techniques in your own environment.

UE Done Right

The cost of the course is $799, but you can sign up with the Habañero client rate of $499, if you email me and mention you read about it on the blog.

Hope you can come, it will be a fun two days!

The Vancouver User Experience Group (VanUE) has been around now for a while, bringing awesome speakers in to talk about all sorts of user experience-related topics. Now that we’ve recently opened an office in the booming city of Calgary, we’d like to see a similar group in our new-found home.

There appears to be a Calgary User Experience Group, but we haven’t been able to get in touch with anyone involved with the group to find out who’s running the show. Are you involved with the Calgary User Experience group, or do you know anyone who is? Let us know!

If we don’t hear anything soon we will start to organize a few events… Calgary, get ready — user experience will reign supreme again!
