In May 2008 I packed up my family and made the move to Calgary to join our local office. Before I left I started exploring what local UX community there was in Calgary. What I did find was a Calgary UX Google Group started a few years ago by Scott Weisbrod at Critical Mass. I went out to a couple get-togethers the group had and got a chance to meet some of the local people working in UX.
One thing I noticed was that the group was having a hard time generating any momentum – things that will help you build a community. So, in Oct 2008 a few of us locally decided to take a stab at moving the group forward and getting some regular momentum behind UX in Calgary and began planning four 2009 events. Much like Vancouver’s VanUE, we want Calgary UX to be a home for our community of user experience professionals.
We just had our first event January 27 and had a great turnout (~35 people on word-of-mouth alone). Presentations included:
- Axure Prototyping – Scott Anderson (UX Guys)
- Rapid Design Labs – Dave Robertson (ThoughtWorks)
- Creating a User Experience Culture – Gene Smith (nForm)
- Sketching User Experience with Clients – me (Habañero). You can see my presentation here.
