On the home improvement front, http://www.hgtv.com is a far better site design and usability wise.

Wow – I just keep seeing more and more of this trend out there. Check out http://www.panic.com/coda/ as an example of who’s doing it well. And http://canadianhouseandhome.com/ as one that makes me dizzy ;)

Both of these solutions are way more “designy”, to address Andrew’s comment.

I’d never noticed that widget before on the Microsoft Site; I think the idea is good but the implementation slightly lacking, i.e. it could be much better integrated into the design scheme so it looks less like a widget and more as though it is part of the site like the section at the bottom.
