About a month ago on my (long) way home, I’ve noticed the Canadian geese making their way south; flying in a perfect arrow-head, knowing intuitively what they have to do. Now, winter is here and I guess it’s time for the sparrows to also migrate. I’ve noticed, though, that unlike the geese which were orderly, the sparrows were all over the place, changing directions as they go (I have a compass in my car), as if they knew they had to migrate but had no idea how to go about doing so. It made me think about team work…
I am involved in an interesting project as part of a team developing a web application, as an Information Architect (IA). The project has a tight deadline (of course) and a fixed budget (can it be any different?). This is challenging: how can we work together as a team to make the best of each other’s talents and abilities? We do not work in a vacuum; we HAVE to communicate, even if we talk different languages: Business talk, dev lingo and human (which is my specialty). We use the same words but mean different things. We HAVE to trust each other such that we are all professionals and know what we’re doing (although, by default, the other team members are just plain wrong!).
In our case, I feel, we are much like the Canadian geese. Each team member takes the lead at the right time while the others are supported by the lift force created by the person in front. We know where we are going: the arrow is showing us the way.
Now imagine us being sparrows… Oy vey!
